Blog Tour | Extract | The Girl in The Tower by Katherine Arden

It is with great pleasure to announce The Girl in The Tower by Katherine Arden is out now, today. So go grab a copy and devour this beauty. To commence the release of The Girl in The Tower, I have an amazing extract in store for you all.
Without further ado, I bring forth the extract - The Death of The Snow-Maiden. Even the extract is mind-blowing and captivating.

The Girl in The Tower - Extract

Moscow, just past midwinter, and the haze of ten thousand fires rose to meet a smothering sky. To the west a little light lingered, but in the east the clouds mounded up, bruise- colored in the livid dusk, buckling with unfallen snow. Two rivers gashed the skin of the Russian forest, and Moscow lay at their joining, atop a pine- clad hill. Her squat, white walls enclosed a jumble of hovels and churches; her palaces’ ice- streaked towers splayed like desperate fingers against the sky. As the daylight faded, lights kindled in the towers’ high windows.

A woman, magnificently dressed, stood at one of these windows, watching the firelight mingle with the stormy dusk. Behind her, two other women sat beside an oven, sewing. “That is the third time Olga has gone to the window this hour,” whispered one of the women. Her ringed hands flashed in the dim light; her dazzling headdress drew the eye from boils on her nose. Waiting- women clustered nearby, nodding like blossoms. Slaves stood near the chilly walls, their lank hair wrapped in kerchiefs. “Well, of course, Darinka!” returned the second woman. “She is waiting for her brother, the madcap monk. How long has it been since Brother Aleksandr left for Sarai? My husband has been waiting for him since the first snow. Now poor Olga is pining at her window.

Well, good luck to her. Brother Aleksandr is probably dead in a snowbank.” The speaker was Eudokhia Dmitreeva, Grand Princess of Moscow. Her robe was sewn with gems; her rosebud mouth concealed the stumps of three blackened teeth. She raised her voice shrilly. “You will kill yourself standing in this wind, Olya. If Brother Aleksandr were coming, he would have been here by now.”
“As you say,” Olga replied coolly from the window. “I am glad you are here to teach me patience. Perhaps my daughter will learn from you how a princess behaves.” Eudokhia’s lips thinned. She had no children. Olga had two, and was expecting a third before Easter.
“What is that?” said Darinka suddenly. “I heard a noise. Did you hear that?”
Outside, the storm was rising. “It was the wind,” said Eudokhia.
“Only the wind. What a fool you are, Darinka.” But she shivered.
“Olga, send for more wine; it is cold in this drafty room.”
In truth, the workroom was warm— windowless, save for the single slit— heated with a stove and many bodies. But— “Very well,” said Olga. She nodded at her servant, and the woman went out, down the steps into the freezing night. “I hate nights like this,” said Darinka. She clutched her robe about her and scratched a scab on her nose. Her eyes darted from candle to shadow and back. “She comes on nights like this.” “She?” asked Eudokhia sourly. “Who is she?”
“Who is she?” repeated Darinka. “You mean you don’t know?” Darinka looked superior. “She is the ghost.” Olga’s two children, who had been arguing beside the oven, stopped screeching. Eudokhia sniffed. From her place by the window, Olga frowned. “There is no ghost,” Eudokhia said. She reached for a plum preserved in honey, bit and chewed daintily, then licked the sweetness from her fingers. Her tone implied that this palace was not quite worthy of a ghost.

“I have seen her!” protested Darinka, stung. “Last time I slept here, I saw her.” Highborn women, who must live and die in towers, were much given to visiting. Now and again, they stayed overnight for company, when their husbands were away. Olga’s palace— clean, orderly, prosperous— was a favorite; the more so as Olga was eight months gone with child and did not go out.
Hearing, Olga frowned, but Darinka, eager for attention, hurried on. “It was just after midnight. Some days ago. A little before Midwinter.” She leaned forward, and her headdress tipped precariously. “I was awakened— I cannot remember what awakened me. A noise . . .” Olga made the faintest sound of derision. Darinka scowled. “I cannot remember,” she repeated. “I awakened and all was still. Cold
moonlight seeped around the shutters. I thought I heard something in the corner. A rat, perhaps, scritching.” Darinka’s voice dropped. “I lay still, with the blankets drawn about me. But I could not fall asleep. Then I heard someone whimper. I opened my eyes and shook Nastka, who slept next to me. ‘Nastka,’ I told her, ‘Nastka, light a lamp. Someone is crying.’ But Nastka did not stir.” Darinka paused. The room had fallen silent.
“Then,” Darinka went on, “I saw a gleam of light. It was an unchristian glow, colder than moonlight, nothing like good firelight. This glow came nearer and nearer . . .” Darinka paused again. “And then I saw her,” she finished in a hushed voice.
“Her? Who? What did she look like?” cried a dozen voices.
“White as bone,” Darinka whispered. “Mouth fallen in, eyes dark pits to swallow the world. She stared at me, lipless as she was, and I tried to scream but I could not.”
One of the listeners squealed; others were clutching hands. “Enough,” snapped Olga, turning from her place by the window. The word cut through their half- serious hysteria, and the women fell uneasily silent. Olga added, “You are frightening my children.”

Blog Tour | Q&A | When Dimple Met Rishi by Sandhya Menon

It is with great honor to announce that the UK When Dimple Met Rishi tour has officially started right here on The Book Chapter and I am so fricking excited. To kick start off this tour I have an epic Q&A in store for you, I swear Sandhya is the sweetest and the answers are just amazing. Without further ado I bring forth the Q&A...

Disclaimer; random Bollywood GIF's will be used by yours truly because words are not enough to describe my emotions to all these answers, plus Bollywood GIFs are life.

Everyone's crush, just saying

Thank-you so much Sandhya for joining me on my blog and another big thank-you for writing such a master-piece ‘When Dimple Met Rishi’. I guess I speak for most people when I say, I’ve never connected with a character like I did with Dimple before.

I’m so glad you connected with Dimple! That makes me so happy! :) - Sandhya

Where did the idea for ‘When Dimple Met Rishi’ come from?

I was contacted by S&S with the kernel of the idea—two Indian-American teens whose parents want to arrange their marriage, and only one of them is really on board with the plan. I knew I had to flesh it out and turn it into a book because there is such an incredible dearth of happy stories about marginalized teens! It really appealed to me that this wasn’t an issue book or a book about poverty in India or something depressing like that. I wanted to show brown teens kissing, living life, chasing their passions, and getting happily-ever-afters!

When Rishi and Dimple first met haha

Are you working on anything at the moment?

My second book, another YA contemporary, will be out next summer! Hodder & Stoughton has bought the UK rights to that one, too, so I’m so psyched that UK readers will get to read it. :)

Will you be writing a sequel or a companion novel to ‘When Dimple Met Rishi’?

Well, never say never. ;)

OHMYGOD OHMYGOD

If you could describe Dimple and Rishi in 3 words each, what would they be?

Dimple: Spitfire, ambitious, feminist
Rishi: Romantic, traditionalist, artist

Where there any difficult and/or fun parts of ‘When Dimple Met Rishi’ to write?

Oh, so many of each! The difficult parts were when I had to put them through tough times. *sniff* I really felt sad doing it and I can’t say exactly what without giving away some spoilers, but readers can take solace in the fact that it totally broke my heart, too.

The fun times were anytime I got to write banter and sarcastic jokes (of which there were many!), kissing scenes (especially the one at Bernal Heights), the “I love you” scene, and the end!

What are Dimple and Rishi doing beyond the book, how are things going?

I’m happy to say they’re both chasing their dreams, living life to the fullest, and sneaking kisses every chance they can! :)

YAAASSSSSS

What inspired you to make Dimple an aspiring tech student?

Another paucity we see in YA—a lack of STEM (science/technology/engineering/mathematics) girls! I wanted to show a strong female character who could totally kick any boy’s arse in a STEM field.

YAS! So nice to get some rep in YA as a tech student

Top 3 tips you’d give to struggling writers?

Read as much as you can in various genres. If you hate a book, take note of the mechanics/craft side of things: What did you hate, exactly? Prose? Pacing? Character development? All of those things will teach you what not to do in your own story.

Also set a writing goal and aim to meet it. It doesn’t have to be a certain number of words every day, although that does certainly help. Your goal, especially at the beginning, can be to just write one short story every two weeks or five poems every month. Then make sure you take it to a critique group you can trust for feedback.

Thank-you Sandhya for being on my blog and for the epic debut When Dimple Met Rishi that has stolen many of our hearts. I highly recommend this book to all.

Thank you so much for having me on your blog! :) - Sandhya

Blog Tour | Extract | Done Dirt Cheap by Sarah Nicole Lemon

It is with great pleasure to announce the UK Done Dirt Cheap blog tour has officially started right here on The Book Chapter and I am so excited. To kick start off this epic tour, I have an amazing extract in store for you all.

Without further ado, I bring forth the extract - Tourmaline and Virginia. Even the extract is mind-blowing and captivating.

Done Dirt Cheap - Extract

Something told Virginia Campbell that Tourmaline Harris was the type of girl to arrive even to prison exactly on time, which meant Virginia was late.
Keeping a hawk eye turned to the thin streams of people flowing into the prison, Virginia sat on the truck bumper, thighs perched off the broiling chrome. If she had to wait until visiting time was over, she might as well get breakfast. Frowning, she glanced at her phone, looking up just in time to catch Tourmaline huffing against the flow of people in the parking lot.
The moment was so perfect it was as if Virginia hadn't planned it.
   "Tourmaline?"
Tourmaline - pretty, blond, blue-eyed Wonder Bread-with-margarine girl, despite her father's reputation- turned and gulped like a goldfish wearing Lilly Pulitzer. "Virginia?"
Virginia smiled and pushed off the truck.
In all her years working for Hazard, Virginia hadn't once crossed paths with the Wardens of Iron Gate, but she knew plenty.
When motorcycles roared past her on the road, she'd seen the empty-eyed star of the horned and crowned skull sewn on the backs of the riders' leather vests. She'd heard their stories told like ghost stories - cloaked in fog, late into the drinking hour. She'd heard of their appetites. How their tires ate up the road and spools of darkness tangled in their spokes, sucking up damned souls and women alike, like air for the engines.
Thanks to Hazard, the secretive motorcycle gang was now her secret to gather. Make friends was the order. For what, Virginia didn't know. She'd been too focused on the how. Hazard hadn't said outright, but he'd sucked his lip and looked her over in a way that was plenty clear enough. It was a testament to Hazard that he's waited this long to use her best advantage.
Maybe he'd waited too long. A year long, she wouldn't have balked, and she wouldn't have ended up six hours from home, trying to lie her way into Tourmaline Harris's life.
Virginia tossed her waist-length dark hair behind one shoulder and drew herself up to her full five feet ten inches. "Well, you're the last person I expected to see. What're you doing? Some church thing?" As if she and the rest of their small high school hadn't followed along on the whole fiasco Tourmaline went through with her mom.
"No. I - What are you doing here?"
What else? Visiting unsavory relations." Virginia pulled a cigarette out of a pack and squinted in the bright sun. She lit the smoke, giving the moment space to breathe as she looked Tourmaline up and down.
"You're Tourmaline Harris, right? As in, the Wardens?"
If asked outright, everyone in Alleghany High could say who Tourmaline was, but Tourmaline seemed to do her best to make everyone forget it in the day-to-day - where all Virginia had ever seen was a studious, preppy blonde passing by in a clump of church kids in the hall.
Whatever might have been dangerous in Tourmaline's prettiness was always fast asleep underneath prime day dresses, or jeans and blouses. Her hair was the only thing that seemed to fit - long and languidly unstyled, where the Lilly crowd would have a shiny blowout.
"I always forget. You're not what I would expect." Virginia said over a long exhale.

Virginia Campbell's life hit fast-forward at fifteen, when her mom 'sold' her into the services of a local lawyer: a man go whine the law is merely a suggestion. When Hazard sets his sights on dismantling the Wardens, he sends Virginia, who has every intention of selling out the club - and Tourmaline. But the two girls are stronger than the circumstances that brought them together, and their resilience defines the friendship at the heart of this powerful debut novel.

I know, I haven't been as active on my blog as I hoped I would be but when life and university gets in the way you can't do much. I've been as active as I possibly can be on Twitter and Instagram but I miss blogging. That's why I promised myself I would blog at least twice a month or more, I know it's not much but hopefully that'll increase in my summer holidays.

Personally I feel blogging has really broadened my reading, I read different genres I never thought I would. I see from all perspectives and I love it. I  have also met some amazing people and each has left a mark in my life and though I have not met them all, I really hope one day I will. Through Twitter and Instagram I have made some amazing friendships and I cannot stress enough how amazing the book community is.

Naz, Christine, Dahabo, Anissa, Sally, Vicky, Mia, Alisha, Becca, Zoe, Mikaella, Zulfa - are just a few of the many wonderful friendships I will cherish forever. Y'all rock and I bestow upon you this GIF;

Blog Tour | The Goblins - Extract | Wintersong by S. Jae-Jones

It is with great pleasure to announce the UK Wintersong blog tour has started, right here on The Book Chapter. This debut novel deserves all the praises, I mean come on, it's a book for fans of Labyrinth and Beauty and the Beast. Both my absolute favourite things from childhood.

Without further ado, I bring forth a spectacular extract from Wintersong and guys, even the extract is mind-blowing and chilling.

The Goblin - Extract

But now the fruit-sellers had caught sight of us and our longing glances. "Come, lovely ladies!" they sang. "Come, sweet darlings. Come buy, come buy!" One of them tapped out a rhythm on the wooden planks that served as their table, while the others took up a melody. "Damsons and apricots, peaches and blackberries, taste them and try!"

Without thinking, I began to sing with them, a wordless ooh-oo searching for harmony and counterpoint in their music. Thirds, fifths, diminished sevenths. I played with the chords beneath my breath. Together, the fruit-sellers and I wove a shimmering web of sound, haunting, strange, and a little wild.

The vendors suddenly focused their eyes on me, their features sharpening, their smiles lengthening. The hairs on the back of my neck stood on end and I let the melody drop. The touch of their eyes was a tickle on my skin, but behind me I could sense the gaze of an unseen other, as palpable as a hand caressing my nape. I glanced over my shoulder.

The tall, pale, elegant stranger.

His features were shadowed by a hood, but beneath the cloak, his clothes were fine. I noted the glint of gold and silver thread on green velvet brocade. Seeing my inquisitive expression, the stranger stirred and folded his cloak about him, but not before I caught a glimpse of dun-colored leather breeches outlining the slim shape of his hips. I turned my face away, my blush heating the air about me. He seemed familiar, somehow.

"Brava, brava!" the fruit-sellers cried once they had finished their song. "Clever maiden in red, come take your reward!"

They waved their hands over the fruits on display, their fingers long and slim. For a moment, it seemed as though there were too many joints in their fingers, and I felt the brush of something uncanny. But that moment passed, and the merchants picked up a peach, offering it to me with open hands.

The fruit's perfume was thick on the chill autumn air, but beneath the cloying smell was the tang of something rotten, something putrid. I recoiled, and it seemed to me these sellers' appearances had changed. Their skin had taken a greenish tinge, the tips of their teeth were pointed and sharp, and instead of fingernails, they seemed to have claws.

Beware the goblin men, and the wares they sell.

Blog Tour | Q&A | Caraval #1 by Stephanie Garber

It is with great honor to announce that the UK Caraval tour has officially started right here on The Book Chapter and I am so fricking excited. To kick start off this tour I have an epic Q&A in store for you all and that's not all - this is part 1 of the Q&A, be sure to keep an eye out for part 2. Without further ado I bring forth the Q&A...

Disclaimer; random GIF's will be used by yours truly because words are not enough to describe my emotions to all these answers.

Image result for hardy gif

1. Where did the idea for Caraval come from?

I had the idea for this book about a year and a half before I started writing. It started when I was reading the 'Code Name Verity' by Elizabeth Wein. One of the characters in that book is a pilot during World War II. During one scene she picks up a young man who's surrounded by two guards, and the pilot had no idea if he's being guarded because he's a dangerous criminal who needs to be watched, or if it's because he's an important person who needs to be protected. It's a very small part of the book, but the question stuck with me. I loved how either answer could have been true, which made me start thinking about fun it would be to write a book that centers around big mysterious questions like that. This transformed into the idea of writing about a game that made everyone play it constantly question what was real and what was part of the game.

2. Are you working on anything at the moment? (Caraval sequel, maybe?)

Yes! I am actually taking a break from the sequel right now to answer these, which is a good thing, since the ending of the book has not gone in the direction I'd planned. So right now I need a little distance from my characters, because I'm not agreeing with all of their decisions.

Related image

3. Can you tell us about a little about the sequel?

Sadly, everything about the sequel is top secret at the moment, so I can't share much, other than I'm very excited about it, and It's surprised me more than once as I've written it.

4. If you could describe Scarlett and Tella in 3 words each, what would they be?

Scarlett would probably be: Faithful. Hopeful. Stubborn.
Tella would be: Impulsive. Daring. Stubborn

I know I used stubborn twice, but it is one thing the sisters have in common. :)

Image result for tom hardy stubborn gif
Did someone say stubborn? hehehe

5. Were there any difficult and/or fun parts of Caraval to write?

Honestly, every part of this book was both difficult and terribly fun to write. I really like to be surprised in stories. So, when I first sat down to write Caraval, I tried to keep it a secret from myself whether or not everything that happened was real, or just part of a game. I didn't know who was telling the truth, or who was lying, which made it really exciting to write every chapter, because I felt as if I was really playing the game with Scarlett. But it also made it really challenging to write, for that very same reason.

6. Who was your favourite character to write about and why?

I really love all my characters, even the awful ones. But I think Donatella was probably the most fun to write. She's impulsive, unpredictable, and almost everything she says is something that I would never say. So it was fun to write about a character that I could run completely wild with.

Related image

7. If you were stranded on a desert island, which character from Caraval would you want to be with you?

This one is so tough. Probably Legend, because I'm dying to meet him!

(HOLY SHIT YES! LEGEND! I WANT TO MEET HIM TOO. SO BADLY)

Caraval Summary

30964236
There will be 4 epic designs of the
UK edition under the dust jacket.
Whatever you've heard about Caraval, it doesn't compare to the reality. It's more than just a game or a performance. It's the closest you'll ever find to magic in this world...

Welcome, welcome to Caraval - Stephanie Garber's sweeping tale of two sisters who escape their ruthless father when they enter the dangerous intrigue of a legendary game.

Scarlett has never left the tiny island where she and her beloved sister, Tella, live with their powerful, and cruel father. Now Scarlett's father has arranged a marriage for her, and Scarlett thinks her dreams of seeing Caraval, the far-away, once-a-year performance where the audience participates in the show, are over.

But this year, Scarlett's long-dreamt of invitation finally arrives. With  the help of a mysterious sailor, Tella whisks Scarlett away to the show. Only, as soon as they arrive, Tella is kidnapped by Caraval's mastermind organizer, Legend. It turns out that this season's Caraval revolves around Tella, and whoever find her first is the winner.

Scarlett has been told that everything that happens during Caraval is only an elaborate performance. But she nevertheless becomes enmeshed in a game of love, heartbreak, and magic with the other players in the game. And whether Caraval is real or not, she must find Tella before the five nights of the game are over, a dangerous domino effect of consequences is set off, and her sister disappears forever.

Angra is alive, his Decay is spreading - and no one is safe.

Meira will do anything to save her world. But the true solution to stopping the Decay lies in a labyrinth deep beneath the Season Kingdoms. To defeat Angra, Meira will have to enter the Labyrinth, destroy the very magic she's learning to control - and make the biggest sacrifice of all.

Mather will do anything to save his queen. He needs to rally the Children of the Thaw, find Meira - and finally tell her how he really feels. But with a plan of attack that leaves no kingdom unscathed and a major betrayal within their ranks, winning the war - and protecting Meira - slips farther and farther out of reach.

Ceridwen will do anything to save her people. Angra had her brother killed, stole her kingdom, and made her a prisoner. But when she's freed by an unexpected ally who reveals a shocking truth behind Summer's slave trade, Ceridwen must take action to save her true love and her kingdom, even if it costs her little she has left.

As Angra unleashes the Decay on the world; Meira, Mather and Ceridwen must bring the kingdoms of Primoria together ... or lose everything.

Review

I simply do not know where to begin with this review. For those who have been following me know how much I love this trilogy. I read Snow Like Ashes on the day of its release (praise Amazon), and thus began my obsession with this amazing world and mesmerizing characters *cough* THERON. *cough*. I cannot believe it has come to an end. Whenever a series comes to and end its always bittersweet, looking back I can remember every emotion I felt while reading Ice Like Fire; which KILLED ME! My baby THERON.

Frost Like Night continues on from the very ending of Ice Like Fire. Meira on the run with an unknown ally, and Mather with the Children of the Thaw releasing the Winterians from imprisonment at Ventralli after shit went down with Angra. Yes, the bastard lives. And for those who have read Ice Like Fire know what happened to Theron. Don't make me say it. Let's just say the Decay is a piece of shit. The plot was intense, I read the entire book in one sitting. I couldn't help myself. Throughout it all, people separated, reunited and some became stronger. As always Sara has a great world building, description that plays out like a movie; simply captivating you from the first page.

We meet old and new characters. In Frost Like Night we have 3 POVs; Meira, Mather and Ceridwen. With next to mention or POV of Theron (we'll get back to that soon). Meira evolved, finally understanding her powers and become one with it. She stood her ground and fought courageously for her kingdom. Mather was shown in a new light, becoming what he wasn't in book 1. And despite it being amazing, personally I felt disconnected, it just didn't feel real to me. Ceridwen was amazing! I'm so glad we got her POV. It was enlightening, I ship Ceri and King Jesse so hard. The pain she felt was raw, after the death of Simon, she felt lost. And seeing her progress was amazing, I loved it.

Personally I loved the secondary characters more, felt more towards them then I did towards Meira and Mather, which came as a BIG shock to me because in book 1 and 2 I loved reading about them, especially Meira and Theron. AHHH Theron, he was non existent and it really annoyed me. From being a dorky, lovable BAE in book 1, to a necessary main in book 2 to completely vanishing in book 3. WHUT?! Please, why? I still remember him, shirtless and wielding an axe to becoming the villains minion. I CANT! I love Theron and because he was innocent he was just changed to something he wasn't.

I understand why certain  aspects where carried out in such manner. But I felt sad and disappointed when it came to Theron. He will forever be my axe wielding, dorky BAE.

Nevertheless, I feel Sara brought a stunning ending to a great and always  favourite trilogy. I cried, I laughed, I was shocked. But ultimately I am grateful for this trilogy to be a part of my life. I loved the sense of community and the introduction of the other season kingdoms was amazing. Prepare yourself for a shocking ride, guard your heart and expect the unexpected. There will be wedding bells, the sounds of battles and the calm after a war has ended as this stunning trilogy comes to an end.
