Review
Where on Bloodydamn earth do I start with Golden Son. From the minute I started reading there was nothing but suspense, action and heart stopping moments. From how Red Rising ended on such note and how the plot-line varied from chapter to chapter, it was flowing getting a mix of each aspect, some action, some tense, and some just down right jaw dropping and hitting the floor moments. But Golden Son, completely knocked the slate clean and just added suspense on top of suspense, oh and a little more suspense.
I honestly do not know where to begin this review, I am lost for words ever since the last sentence of Golden Son were read and now embedded like burning coal, etched in my brain until the third book is released and in my ever waiting hands, and it's only the 1st Jan 2015. I chose to review this book today and not before because it is to be published and let in to the wild today in the UK - I think - and what better way to celebrate then putting out another review, that will only conclude to this, me cursing inwards and trying to sugar coat what Golden Son has to offer for all you who have yet to read, so buckle up guys.
What surprised and shocked me the most - and it is also the part I love the most - is the way Pierce Brown evolved and changed each characters, from 16 years of age to 20 years, we see a vast change in all the characters but mostly Darrow. Though at some parts he can get a bit over-dramatic and annoying, it was simply a part of him that he couldn't let go, after all he was thrust in to the world of vengeance, betrayal and loss at such a young age, We see a more stronger side of Darrow, a part of him that is more than willing to "Break the Chains" for all his family and all the Reds, But that's not all, along this crusade Darrow comes close to more people, though he still keeps them at arms length, he trusts them and would do anything to save them, regardless on who's side they're on, and that is the side of Darrow that made me sure that he hasn't completely lost himself that he will always remember who he is, though low on the hierarchy, and deemed less capable than others, he will rise above all, not as a Gold but a Red,
Supporting characters from Red Rising play a much bigger role in Golden Son, but most importantly we have more of SEVRO - yes, that's right, he's back and more savage than ever but more loyal to Darrow. We see an alliance in Red Rising between Darrow and Sevro, but now, they are friends, brothers of the same color, and I absolutely love how Sevro is blunt, to the point and doesn't give a rats ass as to who he's speaking to or who is even there, but we see a more deeper and caring side to him that will forever remain with me. Cassius, though only for a notable time present, he doesn't fail to show up all guns blazing and there's more than his reputation he loses. Titus, oh lord did I see redemption in his eyes, only wish there was a chance that Lorn didn't do what he did argghhh. Roque, another sight for sore eyes, but a completely changed man - and nothing more can be said on the topic labeled Roque - *cries in a hole full of feels*. I can go on and on about these characters, but they simply have to show you themselves, who they become and what they intend to do when the last page is read of Golden Son.
Pierce Brown has done it yet again, did not fail to amaze me with Red Rising, but Golden Son has topped the bar on fantasy and I can honestly say that fantasy is now my favourite genre. The plot line was so very intriguing, never failed to make me stop and let all what I just read sink in because it was shocking, gripping and took so many unexpected turns that I could not predict. EVER. Pierce has made this the best novel to end 2014 with, and how well written is was and different. Some readers expect the writing style to be the same but not with this novel, the change is needed the characters have suffered so much and have changed drastically that it can be seen, read and felt through the words written down. The characters play a huge role in this novel, the Sons of Ares have a more active role, and we do get to see who Ares is and I will only say it is a complete and utter jaw dropping moment. This novel will take you on an adventure where there is no turning back, chapters that will leave you reeling in the depth of them and characters that will make you weep until there are no more tears and an ending that will leave you motionless and lost for words.
